What they are made of
Six materials, chosen for how they behave after years of being worn rather than for how they photograph.
- Freshwater pearl
- Grown in fresh water, so no two are the same size or quite the same white. Softer than stone, and it marks if perfume is sprayed over it.
- Agate
- Banded, and the banding runs differently through every bead. Hard enough to be worn every day without a thought.
- Onyx
- Black the whole way through, not coated. It holds a polish for years and shows scratches less than it looks like it would.
- Rose quartz
- Cloudy pink and never clear. The colour sits inside the crystal, so it does not fade in the sun the way a dye would.
- Mother of pearl
- Cut from the inside of the shell, where the layers catch light at an angle and change as your hand moves.
- Carnelian
- Warm orange-red, and it glows when light comes through it from behind. Each bead is its own shade, from honey to brick.
